Hyundai recalls Elantras

Hyundai Motor Co., South Korea’s largest automaker, is recalling 65,000 Elantra sedans in the United States to replace a fuel pump that may lose pressure and degrade the engine’s performance.
The voluntary recall affects 2008 model-year Elantras with a 2.0-liter Beta engine, according to a letter from the Seoul-based automaker posted on the Web site of the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.
Some fuel pumps installed from Nov. 5 to June 28 may lose pumping pressure as gasoline with ethanol produces a buildup of film on the units’ electrical contacts, leading to poor starting or engine hesitation, Hyundai said. The automaker said it wasn’t aware of any injuries related to the defect.
The Elantra is Hyundai’s second-best selling vehicle in the United States, after the Sonata. Sales of the model rose 25% this year through July, to 72,432 units, according to Autodata Corp. in Woodcliff Lake, N.J.
Ohio offers GM incentives
Ohio Lt. Gov. Lee Fisher said the state is offering General Motors Corp. a tax credit and grant worth more than $56 million to keep open its SUV plant in the Dayton suburb of Moraine.
The automaker has said it plans to close the plant by 2010 because of a customer shift to smaller vehicles. About 2,400 workers are employed there.
Toyota, Honda add output
Toyota Motor Corp., Honda Motor Co. and Nissan Motor Co., Japan’s three largest carmakers, increased global production last month to meet demand for fuel-efficient cars from emerging markets.
Toyota increased global production 9%, to 720,923 vehicles; Honda boosted output 18%, to 342,152 vehicles, and Nissan raised production 27%, to 315,975 vehicles, the companies said Wednesday. The increases were amplified because an earthquake cut domestic production in the year-ago period.
