Lexus RX 450h Sets New SUV Economy Benchmark

RX 450h will become Australia’s greenest SUV when it launches in mid-2009, achieving fuel economy figures and emissions closer to a small four-cylinder sedan.

The petrol-electric hybrid will sip just 6.4 litres of fuel per 100 kilometres* and emit just 150grams of CO2 – a figure not achieved in any SUV in Australia.

Amsterdam reveal of KG-1 Concept

kessels300309Dutch design studio KesselsGranger DesignWorks has unveiled the KG-1 Concept car at Amsterdam’s AutoRAI 2009.

As with their other designs, Steven Kessels and James Granger have designed the KG-1 through inspiration of natural forms and materials.

In this case the human body, with all its functions and anatomy, is emphasised in the design.

Kessels said: “We looked at how people often sit in cars. The driver sits upright, active. The passenger is passive, but sits in the same position. This is actually not that natural.

Detroit Electric partners with Proton to mass-produce electric-vehicles by 2012

Detroit Electric, one of the first leaders of the electric car revolution, announced today that it will be partnering up with Proton Holdings Berhad to mass-produce Pure Electric Vehicles (or PEVs if you will). Under the agreement, Detroit Electric will license two Proton vehicle platforms and will contract the Malaysian company to assemble electric-vehicles that will be sold under the Detroit Electric brand.

Detroit Electric plans to sell more than 270,000 PEVs in the United States, Europe, China and UK by 2012. Prices will come between $23,000 and $26,000 for city models and $28,000 and $33,000 for extended range models.

As if the Volvo XC60 wasn’t blobby enough, European tuner Heico is offering a complete styling package for the compact soft-roader that includes front and rear bumpers, side skirts and steel steps, exhaust system, wheels and lowered suspension.

Next Hyundai Tiburon will be a small and affordable coupe

Hyundai isn’t keeping quiet about its future product line, with the company’s U.S. chief previously revealing details about the company’s future hybrid and electric plans and now details about the company’s replacement for the Tiburon.

Speaking with Autoweek, Hyundai’s John Krafcik confirmed that a new compact sports car will be released by the end of 2011.
