Diesel Hybrid Electric Vehicles Join UPS Fleet in Philadelphia

UPS today announced its fleet of alternative-fuel vehicles had expanded with the deployment of 50 next-generation hybrid electric delivery trucks to Philadelphia.

Currently, 50 UPS hybrid electric vehicles (HEVs) operate in Atlanta, Dallas, Houston and Phoenix. The 50 trucks deployed here are part of 200 new HEVs deployed recently to eight U.S. cities. They join the roughly 20,000 low-emission and alternative-fuel vehicles already in use by UPS. The 200 new trucks will operate in Austin, Houston, Philadelphia, Chicago, Washington, D.C., Long Island, Minneapolis and Louisville.

Report: Proton to announce Volkswagen tie-up soon

Proton, an automaker based out of Malaysia, is getting set to announce a possible tie-up with Volkswagen in the next two weeks, according to people familiar with the plan. A company official has been quoted as saying they didn’t want to jump the gun, and that the fruits of the talks with VW will be made public in two weeks.

When asked about the venture VW had this to say in an email: “With reference to Malaysia, there are no concrete developments or agreements. We cannot confirm any statements to the contrary.”

Mysterious Lancia Coupe and Ypsilon Designs found on official site

A number of pictures depicting several Lancia vehicles were posted on the company’s official website. Most of the illustrations feature known cars like the Fulvia Coupe and Granturismo Stilnovo which have appeared at motor shows. However, a couple of unknown coupes are among them.

With the designs coming directly from Fiat Group’s Centro Stile in-house design division, there are also proposals for the replacement of the five-door Ypsilon.

U.S. Mahindra pickups delayed yet again to Dec. 2010

Those who were eagerly awaiting the American launch of India’s Mahindra small diesel pickup truck will have to continue to wait; the date has been pushed back yet again from this spring to December of 2010.

Pawan Goenka, company president of automotive operations, reaffirmed that the TR20 and TR40 have completed all federal testing requirements, but are awaiting EPA certification before they can be sold in the U.S. This postponement represents the fourth anticipated launch date.

Panoz Abruzzi Sports Car Teased Before Le Mans Reveal

Panoz, small-volume American car manufacturer and builder of the AIV Roadster and Esperante, is going to be taking its game up another level. In order to get the people talking, the Georgia-based firm revealed a teaser of its upcoming sports car, the Abruzzi “Spirit of Le Mans”.

Set to debut at Le Mans next month on the Circuit de la Sarthe, the Abruzzi’s design “is inspired from a classic era when racers would literally drive their own cars to Le Mans to compete and then drive back home. However, the technology of the Panoz Abruzzi ‘Spirit of Le Mans’ is absolutely leading-edge.”
