Report: GM nears deal with Spyker for Saab

In the midst of the saga that seemingly never ends, there is now a report that GM may yet again be on the verge of closing a deal with former front runner, Spyker Cars. Spyker produces exotic sports-cars that are known for belonging to a tight-knit community of enthusiasts – not much unlike the owners of Saab vehicles who have been staging worldwide rallies and holding signs that beg, “Save Saab.”

Dutch Carmaker Spyker Sweetens Bid for Saab

Nicholas Vinocur and Harro ten Wolde writing for Reuters reported that Dutch luxury carmaker Spyker submitted an improved bid for Sweden’s Saab to General Motors Co on Thursday, just ahead of a key deadline that could prompt closure of the brand.

“We have continued a constructive dialogue with GM over the acquisition of Saab. We believe the Saab brand has lots of potential and would be keen to close a deal as quickly as possible,” Spyker Chief Executive Victor Muller said in a statement Thursday.

UPDATE: Spyker extends proposal to buy Saab from GM ‘until further notice’

Saab loyalists can keep their candles burning a wee bit longer as supercar manufacturer Spyker has extended the deadline of its final-final offer for the Swedish brand “until further notice.”

Spyker says in an all-too-brief statement (which you’ll find after the jump) that it has been in contact with General Motors today following the Dutch automaker’s announcement that it had that submitted a new offer that addressed 11 obstacles that had apparently previously stalled negotiations. The renewed offer was set to expire at 5pm Eastern today, but Spyker has seen fit to extend it.
