A couple of weeks after Silicon Valley’s famed electric carmaker Tesla Motors shocked us with the announcement that it’s running low on cash and as a result, it had to lay off people and delay the presentation of its highly anticipated Model-S sports sedan until at least 2011, the company surprised us once again with the release of the first ever teaser shot of the four-door electric sedan. Electric Car Maker Tesla Delays Launch and Closes Rand D Facility

Kevin Krolicki and David Bailey writing for Reuters reported that electric car startup Tesla Motors is delaying the launch of a planned five-passenger battery-powered sedan and cutting jobs to conserve cash as a credit crunch drives funding costs sharply higher.

Tesla to Build All-Electric Luxury Sedan in California in 2010

Continuing its investments, Tesla Motors announced that it is planning to build a $250 million facility to manufacture a zero-emission luxury sedan in the heart of Silicon Valley. Named Model S, the five-passenger sedan will be powered by a lithium-ion battery pack and according, it is expected to have a base price of $60,000 and get around 240 miles or 386 km per charge. The first sedans will likely roll off the Tesla’s new assembly line in late 2010.

Tesla’s new gearbox to deliver more range and torque

Tesla Motors has announced that it will team up with BrogWarner to develop a new single-speed gearbox for its Tesla Roadster. The new single-speed gearbox will provide 30 percent higher torque and a 10 percent increase in EPA combined range.

Tesla Working With Other Manufacturers On Electrics

Tesla plans on launching all-electric city cars in 2010 in collaboration with several manufacturers, reports the UK’s Car Online. The experience and know-how Tesla gathered from the development of its Roadster (seen above) is playing out well in its mission to become more than just an independent car company—in fact, it appears Tesla will become something more like a Tier 1 supplier as well as a manufacturer.
